Z is for Zuchon!

Z is for Zuchon!

(Shichon) (Teddy Bear) (Shichon-Teddy Bear) (Tzu Frise)

Bichon Frise / Shih Tzu Hybrid Dogs

The Zuchon, also commonly called a Shichon by many breeders, is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Bichon Frise and the Shih Tzu. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs being bred are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses.

Recognized Names:
American Canine Hybrid Club = Zuchon
Designer Dogs Kennel Club = Zuchon
International Designer Canine Registry® = Shichon (Zuchon)
Designer Breed Registry = Tzu Frise or Zuchon

  1. I was unaware of this breed. I can't speak to the Bichon Frise temperament, but I can tell you that Shih Tzus are the sweetest dogs. Bosco is my third and he is the easiest going dog I've ever been around.

Thanks for a fantastic and informative post, Coralie. La

  8. She looks like a sweetheart. I haven't had a dog in over 25 years - the woes of being a renter! I totally love my two granddogs but hate that they live 100 miles away. I don't seem to visit often enough. Maybe I'll make it to Sacramento more when I actually have a grandchild to go with the four legged critters.

  12. OK, I'll admit, the designer breeds sure are cute but a few years ago they would have been called Heinz 57's! My friend has a Dorky (Yorkie x Dachshund) and he is adorable. She says he is the best dog she has ever owned.

  16. What a doll baby! I know that you must adore that sweet little pup. They become members of your family. I got my hubby a mini schnauzer, named Reuben, 4 years ago and that has been his constant companion. Thank you for sharing.

  18. I HAD A SHIH TZU, NAMED REILLY FOR 14 YEARS, HE DIED LAST YEAR. HE WAS SUCH A SWEET DOG.
HE LOVED EVERYONE, AND WAS SO NICE TO CHILDREN. THE LITTLE BICHON IN THE PICTURE IS ADORABLE, BUT I CAN'T UNDERSTAND HOW THEY CAN GET AWAY BREEDING TWO DIFFERENT TYPE OF DOGS (PEDIGREE) AND THEY HAVE PAPERS, AND THE LITTER IS SOLD AT A VERY HIGH PRICE. IN MY DAY THEY WERE CALLED MUTTS. MAYBE I'M WRONG. WELL, YOU HAVE A NICE DAY, RIZZI
