Does anyone remember the product Spry shortening for cooking? One of my old-time cookbooks has some interesting information in it about this product used in so many 40's and 50's recipes for everything from pie crust to chicken to chocolate cake.

Please visit my 50's FREE RECIPE blog to read the entire article on Spry! It's sure to inform and/or bring back some very sweet memories! Click HERE to read and enjoy!

  1. I remember spry. It use to a Crisco competitor. Did Crisco buy them out?

  2. Oh sure! Lots of products like that have bit the dust....wonder what was in that stuff?
Seems as if we always had lard in the house in those days as well.
Oh well....our lives are shorter for it, I'm sure.

  3. Hi Caralie, Yes I remember spry, boy your really bringing back memories that's for sure. Hey thanks for dropping by and leaving a nice comment. For you living in Michigan, you are well aware that finding a job is difficult. My husband as he works there will still be on the look out for even a better one if it comes along. I'm just so happy because it has been a very long time. I am very very Grateful and the timing was perfect because we were falling behind in so many bills.

Have a Wonderful Day and Thanks Again-

  5. Yes, I remember Spry. My grandmother used to use it to make pie crusts. Her pie crusts sure wee flakey. Don't know if she was just a good cook or the lard did it. Thanks for sharing.

  8. I think Swift shortening must have been a regional thing. I have a bunch of 50s recipe books put out by companies. I love them. I'm playing catch up and I'll be reading but not always commenting.

Oh, I meant to email you but don't know if I did. I sent your bookmark. I was going to include an unsigned card for you to giveaway. You had mentioned that it was one of your faves. I couldn't find it when I sent the bookmark. The next day, I picked up some papers on my desk and there it was. I'll mail it Monday!

    Blessings,
    Christine
